University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital

Remoc, green with glee welcoming kids, parents and visitors wanted to know what to do in an emergency requiring relocation or evacuation of patients.

JBCC was engaged by the University of Chicago Hospital’s Office of Environmental Safety & Health to develop a standard for a patient unit relocation and evacuation plan for the new Comer Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago’s Medical Center campus.

Working in collaboration with the manager and safety officer for Environmental Safety & Health, the Planning & Construction office and the Director of Nursing, JBCC developed patient relocation and evacuation plans for Comer Children’s Hospital in compliance with applicable NFPA, Illinois Department of Public Health and the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organization guidelines.

A specific relocation and evacuation plan was created for each floor and patient care unit within Comer Hospital’s new, state of the art, children’s hospital. Relocation hosting sites were surveyed and identified in two adjacent hospital buildings within the medical center campus and incorporated into the plans for each Comer patient care unit. Graphic plans and instructions were prepared and posted at all patient care unit stations.

The relocation and evacuation plans developed by JBCC for Comer Children’s Hospital were adopted as the standard and will be used as the template for all campus high-rise hospital buildings.
